Tis the season to be cold. While I may love Fall, I vehemently hate snow. Aside from an influx of candy, baked goods, and comfort food; the only exciting thing about Winter is Hot Spiced Mulled Wine. Mulled wine dates back to around 2 BCE with the Roman Legions carting it around. From there it has pretty much become a Winter/Holiday time staple in Europe. Starting next weekend we will be serving the occasional small batch of handmade Glühwein (roughly translated as “glow-wine”, from the hot irons once used for mulling), courtesy of our owner Janine. Glühwein is the German counterpart of mulled wine, typically made with red wine, heated and spiced with cinnamon sticks, cloves, star aniseed, citrus, sugar and at times vanilla pods. But you can get crazy with it and add a shot or four of rum if you’re feeling extra fancy.
